Nagg’s Bridge was an aging three span steel truss structure crossing the Saugeen River between Paisley and Walkerton. The old single lane bridge had decreasing load limits until structural conditions warranted closure. The crossing was viewed by local citizens as an important economic link for local agricultural and as an east-west collector corridor.
BMROSS were retained by the County of Bruce to provide design and construction review service for the proposed replacement. The design provided for a 4 span structure of prestressed concrete girders and foundations set on steel piling. Ice breaking piers were designed to deal with conditions on this reach of the river. The project includes 1.6 km. of road reconstruction for the Municipality of Brockton including a road elevation increase above normal flood levels. An interesting site feature is the design of a canoe launch ramp and parking area to accommodate the hundreds of canoeists that run the Saugeen every year.
